Sustainable Livelihoods

Modern conservation efforts try to balance the needs of humans and the environment.

In-situ conservation efforts are only successful when the needs of local inhabitants are taken into account. Banning logging meant many people turned to harvesting medicinal plants for traditional medicine or hunting wildlife as a means of survival.

By providing alternative livelihood opportunities, conservation activities can help contribute towards poverty reduction and sustainable development.

For instance, WWF has worked to provide local people with markets for pepper, walnuts and honey provide alternative sustainable livelihoods and reduce the number of people poaching or harvesting for traditional Chinese medicine in nature reserves.

The important thing about Biogas is that it saves huge amounts of firewood. In fact, research shows that the average-sized biogas plant can save 4.5 metric tonnes of firewood annually. Many families cannot afford to convert from wood to Biogas. Your donation will ensure a family can convert and begin to help their health, and the environment.bees 2

Or you can give a livelihood to a family in China, allowing them the means to support themselves without endangering the environment. In this way, you are helping to give a family and community a sustainable and reliable income, as well ensuring it is one that does not rely on deforestation, or contribute to global warming.
